Let us help by answering your questions
If SI appears on your schedule with one of the course titles, visit the SI schedule tab above to see when and where SI sessions will be held throughout the semester.
If you cannot make it to an SI Session at the time it starts, feel free to come when you can! Also, feel free to leave early if needed. We are here to help you!
Although SI session attendance is anonymous to the course faculty/staff, the Mississippi State University SI program is accredited through the international SI office. Therefore, throughout the semester we check to see how the grades of those attending SI differ from those that do not attend. We use this information to make adjustments to the program so that we are providing the best service to students.
It means that an undergraduate student is in class with you who has already taken the class and did very well. We call that person an SI Leader. Your SI Leader will hold SI Sessions (study sessions) twice a week for anyone enrolled in that course. You can also meet with your SI Leader during their office hour.
When you arrive at SI, your SI Leader will ask you to sign in. This is to help us gauge our program effectiveness. We do not share this information with SI Instructors/Professors.
SI Leaders create a plan for each SI Session. The SI Leader’s plan was created based off of their experience in the course and feedback from the instructor. The SI Leader will not re-lecture. Instead, the SI Leader will lead participants through activities that allow participants to learn the material on a deeper level.
Going to SI definitely helps! Our statistics show that attending five or more sessions can have a very positive impact on your grade in the course.
You do not get extra credit, but there are definitely extra benefits that you receive by attending SI (better grades, meet people in your class, study with others, etc.)
You are welcome to attend SI even if your course does not have SI. SI Leaders stay with the pace of the course that they are assigned and meet with the instructor/professor regularly.
SI is similar to tutoring in that it helps you understand course material. In tutoring, students bring questions and tutors provide answers. In SI, students attend SI Sessions and SI Leaders lead students through activities that help them understand course content.
SI is not mandatory. Know that our statistics show that attending five or more sessions can have a very positive impact on your grade in the course.
